What is it?

Huddle Chat is an online chat app that connects MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority) riders in real time. It doesn’t just give you transit data—it makes your commute social. Whether you're in the same train car or on opposite sides of a station, the app leverages live MBTA data to spark conversations among fellow riders, share schedule updates, and offer real-time alerts.

Why did we make it?

I was playing around with the MBTA API just as I was starting the WPI course CS4241, Webware. For this class, I joined forces with a team of 4-5 other students to tackle a full-stack web development project. I pitched the idea of a location-based chat app that leverages the MBTA, and the team loved it—so we got started.

How It Works

  • Location-Based Chat: Once you’re on a bus, train, or ferry, you can join chat groups specific to your route or station. Whether you're waiting for your commuter rail, or trying to pass the time on your hour long commute.
  • Alerts: Check for official MBTA alerts and receive these alerts while chatting.
  • Time Table: View your line's time table as well as scheduled departure times for various transit lines.
